album of the year

#BurningThoughts: Grammy’s Breakdown

The 56th Annual Grammy Awards were last Sunday and there were winners and there were losers. This post will discuss who won the awards I think they deserve.

Album of the Year: “Random Access Memories,” Daft Punk

My vinyl copy of “Random Access Memories”

Daft Punk’s win of Album of the Year for Random Access Memories was very well deserved. I enjoyed the album since the first time I listened to it and I have given it quite a few spins since last May when it was released. Their music, while paying homage to the tunes of the 70s, still felt very modern and Daft Punk. With feel good tunes like Get Lucky and more contemplative tracks like TouchRandom Access Memories is good from start to finish. Random Access Memories also won the Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Album as well as Best Engineered Album (Non-Classical). Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance was also awarded to Daft Punk, Pharrell Williams, and Nile Rodgers for Get Lucky.

Song of the Year: “Royals,” Joel Little & Ella Yelich O’Connor (Lorde)

Cover for the single “Royals” by Lorde

When I first heard Lorde’s singe Royals, I new it would be something special. The organic beauty of O’Connor’s voice was perfectly supported by the barren, electronic accompaniment and the female backing vocals. She later expanded on the EP, with a full length album released last September called Pure Heroine, which is filled with some other amazing songs like Team and Tennis Court. Lorde’s future at the point is uncertain, but I hope she continues to produce more great tunes with Joel Little. Lorde also took home the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance for the same song.

Best Country Album: “Same Trailer Different Park,” Kacey Musgraves

Kacey Musgraves’ “Same Trailer, Different Park”

Kacey Musgraves has been a favorite to snag this Grammy since the very start, and it is very well deserved. Catchy melodies and profound lyrics can be found in every song from Follow Your Arrow to Merry Go’ Round. Musgraves and Josh Osborne both won the Grammy for Merry Go’ Round as well.
